- translated by Rosmi Julitasari
VHRmedia, Surabaya – Brantas River Watershed has been contaminated by industrial and household waste. A study of Ecological Observation and Wetlands Conservation (Ecoton) and Jasa Tirta I Public Company Malang showed the phenomena. The joined study had been staged during June – August 2009 to the spring in Kawi, Kelud, Wilis, Welirang, and Arjuna Mountain, as these springs are the water source of Brantas River.
Executive Director of Ecoton Prigi Arisandi said that contamination in Brantas watershed is caused by disintegrated river management and land usage, as well as negligence to the environment ability to support the watershed. Prevention steps are needed to maintain the quality of watershed, such as to maintain the natural forest along the riverside. Natural forest has function to be water preservation to prevent the drought during the dry season.
Ecoton also urged the East Java Governor Soekarwo to save the upper course of Brantas River by making developing partnership among districts, such as Batu, Blitar, Kediri, Jombang, Mojokerto, and Malang district. “Partnership among districts is needed, since those districts are passed by the Brantas River,” Prigi Arisandi said in Surabaya, Monday (9/7).
Ecoton’s research was using water insects as the measurement of water quality. The life of those insects depends on the water quality. So, if the water is contaminated by poisonous chemical, the insects will go away or die automatically. (E4)
